In 2017, Walter made four metal screens titles Uncoating. They imagine what the capsid might look like when in uncoats – a curved surface turning into a flat one, peeling and cracking. These works employ images that are familiar within Walter’s oeuvre but that have mutated under the pressure of a new technique. Plasma cutting is a heavy-duty form of drawing that encourages distortions and allows a new macroscopic-scale to enter the work.

Japanese Proteins

The 'Japanese Proteins' are small drawings made with paint pens and iridescent ink on celebration panels that Walter bought on a trip to Japan. The boards are designed to sign greetings on and each feature a pastel gradient with a gold border. The images riff on diagrams of protein structures that the artist drew from scientific imaging software PyMOL. They are psychedelic, imaginary proteins.
